Constantine V

Byzantine emperor, son of Leo III: co-emperor from 720 and sole ruler in 741–775. An able general, he fought the Arabs and waged nine campaigns against the Bulgars, and had iconoclasm endorsed by the Council of Hieria (754); his iconophile enemies nicknamed him Kopronymos.
