Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik
Tenth Umayyad caliph (724–743). His long reign saw defeats on several frontiers — by the Khazars in the Caucasus, the Türgesh in Transoxiana and the Franks at Tours (732) — and the great Berber revolt in North Africa (740). His grandson Abd al-Rahman founded the Emirate of Córdoba.
