Emperor Wuzong of Tang
Emperor of the Tang dynasty from 840 to 846, born Li Chan and renamed Li Yan shortly before his death. Raised to the throne by the palace eunuchs, he relied on the chancellor Li Deyu, crushed the remnants of the Uyghurs in 843 and, as a fervent Taoist, carried out the great suppression of Buddhism and of foreign religions in 845; he died after taking elixirs of immortality.
