Ennin

Japanese Tendai monk, a disciple of Saichō, known posthumously as Jikaku Daishi. He travelled in Tang China from 838 to 847 and recorded the journey day by day in his diary, the Record of a Pilgrimage to China in Search of the Law; in 854 he became head (zasu) of the Tendai school.
