Empress Suiko
Daughter of Emperor Kinmei and of a Soga mother, the first reigning empress of Japan in the traditional list (592/593–628). She came to the throne after her uncle Soga no Umako had Emperor Sushun killed; her court at Asuka was guided by Umako and by her nephew Prince Shōtoku.
