First Bulgarian Empire
State of Asparuh’s Bulgars and the Slavs of the lower Danube, recognized by Byzantium in 681; it adopted Christianity under Boris I (864), became the centre of Slavonic letters under Simeon I and was conquered by Basil II in 1018.
