Person
Gajah Mada
Chief minister (patih) of Majapahit from the 1330s, under Queen Tribhuwana and her son Hayam Wuruk. A commander of the palace guard who had protected King Jayanagara during the revolt of Kuti, he directed the expansion of Javanese power in the archipelago, including the conquest of Bali in 1343; the Pararaton credits him with the Palapa oath not to rest until the islands were subdued. According to the Pararaton and later tradition, his demand that a Sundanese princess be handed over as tribute led to the bloodshed at Bubat in 1357; later tradition says he then fell from favour, while George Coedès describes him as chief minister until he disappeared from the scene in 1364. His name is linked with a law code known only in a later version.
