George of Antioch

Greek Orthodox Christian from Antioch who served the Zirid emirs of Mahdia, entered the service of the Sicilian court in 1108 and rose to be Roger II's chief minister and 'admiral of admirals' (ammiratus ammiratorum). He led the Sicilian fleets that took Tripoli (1146) and Mahdia (1148) and raided Byzantine Greece in 1147, and he founded the church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio, the Martorana, in Palermo, where he was buried.
