State972–1148
Zirids
Berber dynasty of the Sanhaja, descended from Ziri ibn Manad, which governed Ifriqiya for the Fatimids from 972 and the central Maghreb until 1014, with its residence outside Kairouan. The Zirids gradually became independent and in the mid-11th century broke with the Fatimids and recognised the Abbasids, which provoked the invasion of the Banu Hilal; they moved to Mahdia in 1057 and lost it to the Normans of Sicily in 1148. A branch of the family founded the taifa of Granada.
