Person1296–1359
Gregory Palamas
Byzantine theologian (c. 1296 – 1359), born in Constantinople, a monk of Mount Athos and from 1347 archbishop of Thessalonica, the chief defender of hesychasm. Against Barlaam of Calabria and later Gregory Akindynos and Nikephoros Gregoras he upheld the distinction between God’s essence and his uncreated energies, which the council of 1351 made Orthodox doctrine. In 1354 he spent a year as a captive of the Ottomans; he was canonised in 1368.
