Person1292–1383
John VI Kantakouzenos
Byzantine statesman and emperor (1347–1354), chief minister of Andronikos III and regent for the young John V, whose conflict with the regency of Anna of Savoy grew into the civil war of 1341–1347. Relying on Serbian and Turkish allies — he married his daughter Theodora to the Ottoman ruler Orhan — he entered Constantinople in 1347 and ruled as senior emperor, supporting the hesychasts, until he was forced to abdicate in 1354. As the monk Joasaph he wrote a History of his times, the only surviving account by a Byzantine emperor of his own reign.
