Person
Harihara I
First king of Vijayanagara (reigned from c. 1336 to 1355/1356), the eldest of the five sons of Sangama and founder, with his brother Bukka, of the Sangama dynasty. His capital was first at Anegondi on the Tungabhadra and by 1344 at the new city of Vijayanagara on its southern bank; after the Hoysala king Ballala III was killed at the end of 1342 or in 1343, the brothers took over the Hoysala lands. A widespread reconstruction holds that the brothers had served the Kakatiyas and the kingdom of Kampili and had been taken captive by Muhammad bin Tughluq, but this story is disputed.
