Vijayanagara Empire
Hindu kingdom of southern India (c. 1336–1646), named after its capital Vijayanagara, the ‘City of Victory’ (modern Hampi) on the Tungabhadra. Founded by the Sangama brothers Harihara and Bukka, it brought most of the peninsula south of the Krishna under its rule, fought the Bahmani and later the Deccan sultanates for two centuries, and declined after its defeat at Talikota in 1565.
