Humbert of Silva Candida

Benedictine monk of Moyenmoutier in Lorraine whom Leo IX brought to Rome, made cardinal-bishop of Silva Candida and employed as his chief secretary. As head of the papal legation to Constantinople he laid the bull excommunicating Patriarch Michael Cerularius on the altar of Hagia Sophia on 16 July 1054.
