Pope Leo IX

Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg, bishop of Toul and a kinsman of the Salian emperors, pope from 1049. He made the papacy the centre of church reform, holding synods against simony and clerical marriage in Italy, France and Germany; his war against the Normans ended in defeat at Civitate in 1053, and he died while his legates were in Constantinople.
