Jang Bogo
Silla sea captain, merchant and commander, called Gungbok in his youth. After serving as a junior officer of the Wuning army in Tang China, he established the Cheonghae garrison on Wando in 828, suppressed the slave raiders and came to control shipping between Silla, Tang China and Japan. In 839 he helped King Sinmu to the throne; he was assassinated by Yeom Jang — in 841 according to Japanese sources, in 846 according to the Samguk sagi.
