Person
Jayabaya (Jayabhaya)
King of Kediri in East Java, who came to the throne between 1130 and 1135 and reigned until about 1157; crowned as Sri Varmeshvara, he is known from inscriptions of 1135, 1136 and 1144. Court poets praised him as a conqueror and as an incarnation of Vishnu, and the Kakawin Bharatayuddha was begun for him by Mpu Sedah in 1157. Later Javanese tradition made him a prophet, the reputed author of the prophetic book Prelambang Jayabaya.
