Mahendravarman I
Pallava king of Kanchipuram (c. 600–630), son of Simhavishnu and father of Narasimhavarman I. A pioneer of rock-cut temples among the Pallavas — his inscription at Mandagapattu boasts of a shrine made without brick, timber, metal or mortar — he also wrote the Sanskrit farce Mattavilasa. Tradition holds that the Shaiva saint Appar won him over from Jainism to Shaivism. In his reign Pulakeshin II invaded the Pallava kingdom.
