Maysara al-Matghari

Berber leader, probably a chief of the Matghara tribe, whom the tribes of western Morocco, inspired by Sufri preachers, chose to lead their revolt against the Umayyads in 740. He took Tangier and is said to have claimed the title of caliph, but was deposed and killed by his own followers the same year. Hostile Arab chroniclers called him ‘the Ignoble’ and a water-carrier.
