Mstislav of Chernigov

Son of Vladimir the Great, prince of Tmutarakan on the Strait of Kerch, famed for killing the Kasog prince Rededya in single combat (1022). In 1024 he defeated his brother Yaroslav at Listven, and in 1026 the brothers divided Rus’ along the Dnieper, Mstislav ruling the left bank from Chernihiv, where he began the Cathedral of the Saviour. When he died — in 1036, according to the chronicle — Yaroslav became sole ruler.
