Yaroslav the Wise
Son of Vladimir the Great; prince of Rostov and Novgorod, then prince of Kyiv in 1016–1018 and from 1019 until his death in 1054 (after his brother Mstislav died in 1036, sole ruler of nearly all Rus, Polotsk excepted). He won the war of succession against Sviatopolk, routed the Pechenegs near Kyiv (1036), built St Sophia of Kyiv and married his daughters to two future kings, Harald Hardrada of Norway and Andrew I of Hungary, and to King Henry I of France; the earliest part of the Russkaya Pravda bears his name.
