Najashi (Ashama ibn Abjar)
King of Aksum in the early 7th century, known to Muslim tradition as the Najashi (from the Ge’ez negus, “king”) and by the name Ashama. Around 615 he gave refuge to Muhammad’s persecuted followers; tradition holds that he embraced Islam and that Muhammad prayed for him when he died. Some historians identify him with King Armah, known from Aksumite coins, others dispute this.
