Amr ibn al-As
Qurayshite companion of Muhammad — once the Meccan envoy who tried to have the Muslim refugees extradited from Aksum — who probably embraced Islam in 629/630. He helped win the battles of Ajnadayn and the Yarmuk, conquered Egypt in 639–642 and founded Fustat; in the First Fitna he sided with Mu'awiya, represented him at the arbitration after Siffin and in 658 took Egypt for him, governing it until his death.
