Uthman ibn Affan
Early Muslim of the Umayyad clan of Quraysh, Muhammad’s son-in-law, and the third caliph (644–656). Under him the standard text of the Qur’an was compiled; his reliance on Umayyad kinsmen provoked a revolt, and he was killed by rebels in his house in Medina, which set off the First Fitna.
