Person1056–1114
Nestor the Chronicler
Monk and deacon of the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves, author of the Reading on Boris and Gleb and of the Life of Theodosius of the Caves. Tradition — the 13th-century Caves Patericon and a 16th-century copy of the chronicle — names him as the author of the Tale of Bygone Years; some scholars regard his name in the 16th-century copy as a later insertion, and modern scholarship treats the chronicle as an anonymous compilation. Venerated as a saint, he rests in the Near Caves of the monastery.
