Nikephoros I
Byzantine emperor (802–811). As general logothete, in charge of the finances under Irene, he deposed her on 31 October 802. He raised taxes, reorganized military recruitment and refused the tribute Irene had paid to Harun al-Rashid (though after Harun’s invasion of 806 he had to resume it). He was killed when Khan Krum destroyed his army in the Balkan Mountains in July 811.
