Person
Osman I
Founder and eponym of the Ottoman dynasty (died 1323 or 1324), the bey of a small Turkmen principality around Söğüt in north-western Anatolia, on the frontier of Byzantine Bithynia. Almost nothing about him is known for certain: no written source survives from his reign, and the stories of his life were recorded only in the 15th century. His victory at Bapheus (1302) opened the Bithynian countryside to his warriors, and his son Orhan took Bursa in 1326.
