Pulcheria
Elder sister of Theodosius II, proclaimed Augusta in 414, aged 15 or 16, and her brother’s guardian during his minority. A vowed virgin and a powerful patron of the Church, she opposed Nestorius; after her brother’s death in 450 she married Marcian, who became emperor, and with him convened the Council of Chalcedon (451).
