Ramathibodi I (U Thong)

Founder and first king of Ayutthaya (1350/1351–1369), known before his coronation as U Thong. His origins are obscure: later traditions make him a prince of U Thong, while a 17th-century Dutch account calls him a Chinese merchant who had become ruler of Phetchaburi; both versions are disputed. He founded his capital on an island in the Chao Phraya, united the old centres of Lopburi and Suphanburi through family ties and in 1352 laid siege to Angkor.
