Romanos IV Diogenes
Cappadocian general who became Byzantine emperor in 1068 by marrying the widowed empress Eudokia Makrembolitissa. He campaigned against the Seljuks but was defeated and captured by Alp Arslan at Manzikert in 1071; deposed in his absence by the Doukas family, he was blinded and died of his wounds in 1072.
