Samanids
Iranian dynasty descended from Saman Khuda, a landowner of the Balkh region, which ruled Transoxiana and later Khurasan from Samarkand and then Bukhara, at first as governors for the Abbasid caliphs. Under Ismail ibn Ahmad (892–907) it became the strongest power in the east of the caliphate, and in the 10th century its court fostered the revival of Persian literature; in 999 the Karakhanids took Bukhara and the realm was divided.
