Al-Ma'mun
Seventh Abbasid caliph (813–833), a son of Harun al-Rashid, who won the throne in a civil war against his half-brother al-Amin. He promoted the translation of Greek science into Arabic and the flowering of learning in Baghdad, backed the rationalist Mu'tazila and began the mihna, an inquisition of scholars over the createdness of the Qur’an.
