Shailendra dynasty
Dynasty of the ‘kings of the mountain’, bearing the imperial title of maharaja, which appears in Central Java in the second half of the 8th century; its rise was marked by a sudden flowering of Mahayana Buddhism and by the building of Kalasan, Sewu and Borobudur. In the 9th century a Shailendra prince governed Sumatra, and in the 10th–11th centuries the Shailendras were the kings of Srivijaya.
