Mataram kingdom
Hindu-Buddhist kingdom of Java, also called Medang, founded according to tradition by Sanjaya in Central Java in the early 8th century; the name Mataram itself is first attested in inscriptions of the late 9th century. Its Shaiva and Buddhist rulers, and the Shailendras associated with them, built Borobudur and Prambanan; in the 10th century the court moved to East Java, and the kingdom broke up in 1016/1017.
