Timur
Timur (Tamerlane), Turco-Mongol conqueror of the Barlas confederation of Transoxiana and founder of the Timurid Empire. Master of the western Chagatai Khanate by 1370, he defeated the khans of the Golden Horde, the Mamluks, the Ottomans and the Delhi Sultanate, sacking many cities with great brutality, while patronising scholars and building at Samarkand; his empire fragmented soon after his death in 1405.
