Varangians
The East Slavic and Byzantine name for the Scandinavians — warriors, traders and settlers, mostly from what is now Sweden — who from the 8th century went along the rivers of Eastern Europe; from their ranks came the Rus’ and the first princes of Kievan Rus’.
