William the Conqueror
Duke of Normandy from 1035 and king of England from 1066, a descendant of Rollo. He defeated Harold II at Hastings, crushed English resistance, settled a new Norman nobility on the land and at Christmas 1085 ordered the Domesday survey; he died at Rouen in 1087 after a campaign in the French Vexin.
