Imad ad-Din Zengi

Turkoman commander in Seljuk service, son of Aq Sunqur, governor of Aleppo under Malik-Shah; atabeg of Mosul from 1127 and of Aleppo from 1128, founder of the Zengid dynasty. He spent much of his career fighting other Muslim rulers, above all for Damascus, which he never took, but his capture of Edessa in 1144 made him a defender of the faith in the eyes of the Muslim world. He was murdered by a slave while besieging Qal'at Ja'bar in 1146.
