County of Edessa

The first of the crusader states, founded in 1098 when Baldwin of Boulogne left the army of the First Crusade and took power in Edessa (now Şanlıurfa). Landlocked, with half its territory east of the Euphrates and a mainly Armenian and Syriac Christian population, it was the weakest of the Latin states: Zengi took its capital in 1144, and the remnants west of the river were lost or sold to Byzantium by 1150.
