Zengids

Turkoman dynasty of atabegs founded by Imad ad-Din Zengi, who became atabeg of Mosul in 1127 and of Aleppo in 1128. Under his son Nur ad-Din it united Muslim Syria and, through its generals Shirkuh and Saladin, took Egypt; after Nur ad-Din's death in 1174 Saladin took over most of its lands, while Zengid branches held Mosul and parts of Upper Mesopotamia into the 13th century.
