Zhang Yichao
Leader from one of the great families of Dunhuang (Shazhou). In 848, as the Tibetan Empire fell apart, he drove the Tibetan garrison out of Shazhou, then took the neighbouring prefectures of the Hexi Corridor and offered them to the Tang, who in 851 made him military governor of the new Guiyi (“Returning to Righteousness”) Army. In 867 he went to the court at Chang’an, where the emperor kept him, and he died in 872, while his nephew Zhang Huaishen governed Dunhuang.
