Death of Catherine the Great
Empress Catherine the Great, who had reigned for 34 years, died at the Winter Palace without regaining consciousness after a stroke suffered the day before. She was succeeded by her son, Paul I.

Catherine’s reign was a time of imperial expansion — the annexation of Crimea and the northern Black Sea coast and the three partitions of Poland — and of the provincial reform. Paul I, long kept away from affairs of state, began revising many of his mother’s institutions from his very first days on the throne.
