Haitian Revolution
A slave revolt in the French colony of Saint-Domingue grew into a war of independence and ended with the creation of Haiti, the first state founded by rebel slaves.

The revolt broke out in August 1791 on the plantations of the Northern Plain; its start is dated to the night of either 21 or 22 August. In 1794 the National Convention abolished slavery, and the former slave Toussaint Louverture, having repelled British and Spanish intervention, was by 1801 the de facto ruler of the whole island.
In 1802 an expedition under General Leclerc, sent by Napoleon, arrived on the island; Toussaint was seized and died in captivity in France, but the army of Dessalines and epidemics destroyed the French, and in November 1803 their last troops left the colony.
