Syrym Datuly’s uprising
A long-running movement of the Kazakhs of the Junior Zhuz, led by Syrym Datuly, an elder of the Bayuly tribe, against the ban on moving their herds across the Ural River and against the abuses of the khan, the sultans and the Ural Cossacks.

The Ural Cossack Host and the frontier authorities had closed the pastures on the right, “inner” bank of the Ural to the Kazakhs, while within the zhuz the feud between the clan elders and Nuraly Khan and the sultans was growing more bitter. The rebels raided the outposts of the frontier line; in 1786 Nuraly Khan had to be taken away to Ufa.
Governor-General Iosif Igelström tried to rely on the elders and convened a congress of them, headed by Syrym, but in 1789 the authorities went back to relying on the khan’s power, and the struggle resumed; caravan trade with Central Asia across the steppe virtually ceased in the 1790s. By 1797 negotiations had pacified most of the clans, and Syrym moved away to the lands of the Khanate of Khiva, where he died in 1802. The movement is dated by year only: the sources do not give the exact days of its beginning and end.
