Premiere of Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony
Beethoven’s Third Symphony, originally dedicated to Napoleon Bonaparte, was performed in public for the first time at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna. According to his pupil and secretary Ferdinand Ries, on learning that Napoleon had proclaimed himself emperor, the composer angrily tore up the title page bearing Napoleon’s name.

Written in 1803–1804, the symphony was first heard at private performances in the palace of Prince Lobkowitz, to whom Beethoven dedicated it. The score was published in 1806 under the title “Heroic Symphony, composed to celebrate the memory of a great man”. Its scale and drama made the Eroica a turning point between the Classical and Romantic eras.
