Jihad of Usman dan Fodio

Usman dan Fodio, an Islamic preacher of the Fulani (Fulbe) people who had been driven out by the ruler of Gobir, launched a holy war against the Hausa states. In its course the Sokoto Caliphate arose, one of the largest African states of the 19th century.

In 1804 dan Fodio and his followers made a hijra (emigration) from Degel to Gudu; on 21 February Yunfa, the ruler of Gobir, declared war on them. A militia of Fulani and Hausa defeated the Gobir army and then subdued Kano, Katsina and other city-states; in 1808 the Gobir capital, Alkalawa, fell, and Yunfa was killed.

In 1809 dan Fodio’s son Muhammed Bello founded the town of Sokoto, which became the capital of the caliphate; the caliphate lasted until the British conquest at the beginning of the 20th century.
