Muhammad Ali becomes ruler of Egypt
The ulama and sheikhs of Cairo, who had risen against the Ottoman governor Hurshid Pasha, chose the Albanian commander Muhammad Ali as ruler of Egypt; in the summer of 1805 the sultan confirmed him as pasha.

Muhammad Ali had come to Egypt with the Ottoman troops sent to drive out the French, and in the struggle between the Ottoman governors and the Mamluks he managed to win the support of the people of Cairo and the clergy. Sources give different dates for his election (2 or 17 May 1805); the sultan’s firman confirming him is dated July.
Having consolidated his power, in 1811 he massacred the Mamluk elite and reformed the army, the economy and education, making Egypt a virtually independent state; he is regarded as the founder of modern Egypt.
