Prolonged rains delayed the campaign, and the Ottomans reached the city without their heavy siege guns, relying on mines dug under the walls. By mid-October supplies were running out and the army had been weakened by disease and desertion, and on 15 October the sultan lifted the siege. The failure at Vienna marked the limit of the rapid Ottoman advance into Central Europe, although the wars with the Habsburgs went on for another century and a half.
