Rum Rebellion
Officers of the New South Wales Corps led by Major George Johnston arrested the colony’s governor, William Bligh, in the only military coup in Australian history.

The rebellion takes its name from the monopoly on the rum trade held by the officers of the “Rum Corps”, which Bligh — the former commander of the Bounty — had tried to curb. The military held power until the arrival of a new governor, Lachlan Macquarie, in 1810.
