Treaties of Tilsit
After the Russian army’s defeat at Friedland, Napoleon and Alexander I met on a raft in the middle of the Neman and concluded peace and an alliance. Prussia lost about half of its territory, and Russia joined the Continental System against Britain.

Negotiations began on 13 (25) June; the Franco-Russian treaty was signed on 25 June (7 July), and the Franco-Prussian treaty two days later. Prussia’s Polish possessions became the Duchy of Warsaw, while its western lands and neighbouring principalities formed the Kingdom of Westphalia under Jérôme Bonaparte.
The alliance of the two emperors gave Napoleon a free hand in Spain and Russia a free hand in its war with Sweden, but disputes over the blockade and the Polish question led to war five years later, in 1812.
